Paper industry in Mexico

Reuse of industrial effluents with potential for microbiological growth and high suspended solids
The Pulp and Paper industry is one of the most water-consuming industries; generating high volumes of wastewater in almost all its processes. Although this industry is highly dependent on fresh water, significant improvements have been made over typical water use patterns. The practice has been adopted of taking advantage of the residual effluents of its processes for reuse in a closed circuit, whose objective is to eliminate discharges to the environment; recycling and reusing most of its solid and liquid waste. In addition to the above, the region where the project is located has problems of overexploitation of aquifers; which in turn has generated serious problems with drainage, sanitation and drinking water supply to nearby populations.
CHALLENGE
Closed circuits have their problems since they generate an environment favorable to microbiological growth, which can cause severe operation and clogging problems in conventional filtration systems.
SOLUTION
An Ultrafiltration system was implemented to recover water whose quality allows the replacement of fresh water at the entrance to the mill, turbidity less than 1 NTU and color less than 30 Pt-Co. In addition, significant savings are generated by reducing the consumption of well water at high prices.
